Bring Back Bunheads

We're in the golden age for television.  Television shows have become almost more popular than movies.  TV shows allow the writers to work on character development and the viewer get to enjoy the series like a book - watch it all at once or keep going back to it at different times.  We get to continue on the writer's journey of the world they create.

One of my favorite things about TV today is the viewer's have the ability to express their love for a series.  As you know Arrested Development was canceled too soon and Netflix has released a new season of the show.  Veronica Mars was sadly canceled about 10 years ago and now they're making a movie!

Last week I heard Bunheads, one of my favorite shows on television, was canceled.  Amy Sherman-Palladino's writing is very unique.  I love her smart and politically savvy writing with its quick humorous banter.  If you're a fan I suggest you vote for the series, writer to ABC, and maybe even ask Netflix to bring the series back.  Don't give up hope!  Your opinion counts!

The FIT Museum Luxury Collection

What is luxury to you?  Egyptian cotton sheets?  A manicure?  A $400 pair of shoes?  A couture gown?  Luxury changes with the eye of the beholder and with the times.  Above are some of my picks of Etsy luxury for 2011 from www.etsy.com.  The items range in price from $90 -340.  The shops are Ouma, Myrakim, Gimmenicole, and Ashesandempires.

Since I was a young girl I would dream of visiting the FIT campus and years later I finally got to see it.  I remember reading an article about the Fashion Merchandiser for the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer back in 1998 which lead to my research of FIT.  I thought wow what a cool job!  I want to do something like that!  The FIT Museum is a fascinating place to visit.  Everyone from fashionistas to historians will enjoy it.  I love seeing the evolution of fashion throughout the years.

The collection we went to see was about Luxury.  Coco Chanel once said simplicity does not mean poverty.  Her goal was to bring high fashion to every woman's life.  Coco saw the value in the less is more philosophy.  She placed emphasis on luxury and minimalism.   There are many degrees of luxury.  Lavish fabrics, trimmings and embroidery.  It is thought we live by and for luxury.  Luxury tends to show class distinctions.

Fashion, like most things tends to repeat itself and go through cycles.  Fashion is influenced by the economy, politics, technology, and environmental concerns.  The collection at the FIT Museum emphasized that luxurious things can often be the most simple.  This was my first time seeing the authentic dresses and women's dress suits by Coco Chanel.  Some of the items I remember most were the Chanel dresses and flapper 1920s dresses.

Is NEW Always Better?

Living in the United States in 2009 you face certain pressures as far as status quo. If you don't own the latest cell phone or ipod or drive the hippiest car you may be looked down by certain "friends." Computers and cameras are viewed as disposoble. The prices of computers have decreased greatly within the past several years, so if you have a problem with your computer it's cheaper to just buy a new one. (Does this disposable attitude extend to personal relationships as well.) With all of these disposable products i begin to picture our giant landfills becoming larger by the second. What's the point of all this? Our spending habits aren't even helping the economy anymore because of all the labor has been shipped overseas. So basically we're left with no jobs, no money, no friends and lots of garbage. Our thirst for spending is still intact like a vampire's thirst for fresh blood.

It's time to return to the simple life (no, not the Paris Hilton reality tv show). We need to find the things in life that truly make us happy not what the media tells us should make us happy. Turn off the tv, the computer, the ipod, and yes even the *gasp* cell phone and spend time with your friends and family, develop a hobby, or volunteer somewhere. You can't avoid shopping altoether obviously. It's the small things that count, so when you feel that hunger stop yourself from going to the cheapest places like Walmart or the Dollar Store and go to local shops around your community. Support your local restaurants, theaters, coffee shops, and artisans.

TGIF

"It's Friday night/And the mood is right/Gonna have some fun/Show you how it's done, TGIF.."

Ahhh childhood nostalgia. It was a time long ago...before reality television. Fridays remind me of the good old days. When TGIF meant more than a saying it was an event for children in the late 80s-90s.

If you didn't recognize the quote it's the theme song from the TGIF "Family Friendly" sitcom television lineup on ABC. The lineup consisted of 4 sitcoms 8pm-10pm. 20/20 aired following TGIF. This block ran 1988 - 2005. TGIF had its own branding of graphics and a theme song. The family friendly shows lineup was an ABC staple reminiscent from the 1950s (The Donna Reed Show, The Brady Bunch, Leave it to Beaver). The shows were wholesome, they brought the family together and just made you feel good. Over the years TGIF shows included: Full House, Family Matters, Step by Step, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, Perfect Strangers, Dinosaurs, Baby Talk, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Boy Meets World, and Clueless.

Thinking about TGIF reminds me of hanging out in the basement of my old house, writing on the chalkboard, playing hangman, making forts out of pillows, playing dress up with my cat, sharing air popped popcorn and ginger ale with my grandma, grandpa, mom, dad, and brother. It was more than television. It was about enjoying the simple things in your life - FAMILY. These are the things we need to focus on now more than ever during this recession. I admit even to this day...I sometimes sneak and watch old Full House reruns. It calms me like a glass of milk or a cup of chicken noodle soup. For 30 minutes I can escape to another time...a calmer time. So tonight find a way to calm down, relax, and have fun the way we did during the TGIF days. Enjoy! KR

Why is every good show cancelled?

It seems as though anytime I like a new TV show it lasts for about a season or two and boom it's gone. I don't watch much TV, but I like to DVR some shows and watch them during some free time. No reality TV shows though! Most recently I've enjoyed Samantha Who and Kath & Kim. Christina Applegate did an amazing job with her role as Samantha. Her delivery of lines was hilarious! Both shows were funny and offbeat (just the way I like it). Over the past few years they've cut a few other favorites of mine: Men in Trees and Joan of Arcadia. I guess it comes down to money and if the stations aren't pulling in the numbers then it's time to cut quality shows. Sad but true... Well hopefully there will be a new show this fall I'll enjoy for a season.
