Hello! Happy Holidays! I'm sorry I've been MIA. Running after a 3 year old can keep a gal pretty busy. I've also been working on designs for my Etsy shop www.ricerafferty.etsy.com and now my new zazzle shop https://www.zazzle.com/kararice2?rf=238645666398637581.
One of my favorite features of Zazzle is it gives our customers the ability to fully customize our products. For example, change Nana to Mimi or any name you wish. You can also transfer ANY design to ANY product. How cool is that?!
Check out our shop now for exciting new holiday designs for throw pillows, aprons, t-shirts and so much more!
Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season!

300 Sales on Etsy!
We're so excited to celebrate 300 sales on Etsy! Woo hoo! We first created our Etsy shop in September of 2009 in the middle of the financial crisis...why not, right?! I remember posting three listings and I naively thought they were going to sell immediately. When you're competing against thousands of other shops you need to stand out. I didn't understand then about how to properly photograph and market my product for online sales. We slowly began improving our photography skills, learning through trial error and making sales. I mainly worked on Rice Rafferty at night while I worked a full time graphic design job. My 10 years of working design experience plus all of my knowledge from working on Rice Rafferty has taught me SO much.
Our accessory designs led us on the path of designing wedding veils and bridal hair adornments. We participated in fashion shows at Buffalo State College and in St. Augustine, FL, Love Your Mother Fashion show. We feel so grateful to have been published in Well Wed Magazine, The Buffalo Spree, Saint Johns Magazine and The St. Augustine Record. Our journey has led us to meeting so many amazing people and vendors.
Now that I'm a full-time mom, we've expanded our product line to marketing services, home decor (printable art), party decor (printable graphics), and textile designs (fabric, wallpaper, wrapping paper). I feel like I've come full circle. Working on art projects with my son has really inspired me. I love to watch how he is totally in the moment while he's creating art. My goal is to create accessories and art that bring joy and inspire you.
Thank you so much for supporting us! We're so exciting for the projects ahead!
Celebrate with us! 15% off now https://www.etsy.com/shop/ricerafferty?coupon=300SALES when you spend over $50.
Cheers!

My Baby is One
He loves Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, so we decided that would be the perfect theme. I made all the decorations (handmade tissue paper flowers, flag banner, signs, cake topper, etc) and my mom helped me prepare the food and she made his Brady's birthday banner for his high chair (the chair is a family heirloom). My husband was busy with the landscaping. Brady just started walking a week before his first birthday and hasn't stopped since. Since I'm a designer I knew that I wanted unique personal touches for his decorations. I chose the color scheme red, yellow and black. I wanted polka dots, colors, and touches of Mickey Mouse silhouettes to give the suggestion of mickey and a few images of Mickey Mouse, of course! It was a very special day that we'll never forget!

How to Get Started Planning Your Wedding
Wedding planning can be SO overwhelming. I'm very visual, so I created mood boards and collected images that inspired me. I recommend not looking around too much (that's what I did and I would get frustrated with too many choices). Stick with your gut and try to look at your wedding in retrospect. I would regret it if I didn't include _______ in my wedding. I attached a mood board that I used for my Spring wedding. I designed the wedding invitation and chose flowers that would coordinate with the white, ivory, pink, green, and gray color palette. You can add in other colors here and there as well. When weddings have a color scheme that consists of ONLY two colors it reminds me of school mascots (my mom pointed this out to me and that's all I can think of when I see it now). Good luck on your wedding planning journey. Check back for more inspiration!

Black Friday Madness 2010
Did you go out for Black Friday? Find any amazing deals? I have never been out in the middle of the night for black friday. This year I got so excited while designing this festive Black Friday ad (see above) that I decided to get out there and see what this black friday business was all about.
After cooking Thanksgiving dinner I took a disco nap, followed by a few cups of coffee then headed out the door. We drove to the Niagara Falls Outlet Mall. There were surprisingly a lot of people on the road. Once we arrived I was astonished the parking lot was packed solid. We had to park in a parking lot across the road and proceed to run across the street to the shopping center. Canadians love coming to this shopping center too so it was extra crowded. There were police on patrol at the entrance. We luckily missed some riff raff that occurred moments before our arrival. We entered the shopping center around 12:15 ad it was jam packed. Any store that had a huge line outside the door (like Coach, Juicy Couture, Bath & Body Works) we quickly walked by it. We went to stores that weren't as crowded. The environment was stuffy and hot because there were SO many people. I bought a few items from Ann Taylor and Brooks Brothers as Christmas gifts.
I'm happy I went and saw the spectacle of people. The items I purchased were smart, not impulse buys. I can see how people may over shop in environments like this - you begin to feel irritable, tired, and hungry, but you tell yourself, "i'm here so i might as well buy something". You become like a hungry animal in search of a great sale. I bought some excellent quality items at decent prices (I'd rather spend more for good quality than buy cheap clothes for $5 a piece). We left around 3:00 am and I began to feel sick from lack of sleep. Next year, I think I'll sleep in and if I need something I'll order it online.

Featured in Food Network Magazine
In the August issue of Food Network Magazine, one of my photographs from a photo shoot I art directed made it in the magazine. It's always exciting to see your hard work pay off through your marketing efforts. Homemade ice cream is one of the most delicious things you will ever try.

Art Directing and Hand Modeling
My day job is a graphic designer/marketing coordinator for a company that makes small kitchen appliances. My favorite days at work are days when I art direct photo shoots and food styling.
First I prepare days ahead of time by looking through Williams Sonoma Catalogs, Wegmans Magazine, Food Network and anything else I can find for inspiration. I collect photos to fit the theme of the current project, get ideas for food items, and how to prepare the food so it looks like food art. The day before or day of the shoot I head over to Wegmans, voted the best grocery store in the United States, armed with the company charge card and my list of food items and supplies.
Once I gather my supplies I start the prep work. For the rotisserie photo above I cooked the chicken in the rotisserie the night before, so it looked fabulous the next day. After I have the supplies and completed prep work I go over to Dave Wahl's (photographer) studio. I work on some prep work for the day of the shoot like removing dust from the unit we're going to shoot, prepare the food, add the final touches. I discuss the kind of shots I have in mind for the day with the photographer and I continue prepping. Most of the shoot involves a lot of cleaning...i know i know...not so glamorous, but I really enjoy it!
It's really interesting learning the behind the scenes tricks when photographing food. For instance sometimes we use fake ice, ice cream, or steaks in shoots. The above food is all real though. Also, note my career in hand modeling above. Yes, it's my hand. Hand modeling isn't as easy as it looks. You must keep your hand very steady which can be tricky when you're holding something heavy.
After the shoots is finished it's time to clean, clean, clean, then I pack things up. Overall these are my favorite days because it's so neat to be in a photography studio and be physically involved in the process. I think of all the cool ads, and giftboxes that I'll make that will be on QVC, in Target, Wegmans, Bed Bath & Beyond, Kohls, and Big Lots. I love being a part of it.

ACTIVE WEAR made in the USA
Active wear is now a huge part of our lives. It's not just what you wear to the gym or when you're out for a bike ride. Active wear has become part of our street wear - wear it to the mall, the grocery store, or while you're doing a few chores. The great thing about wearing active wear all the time is it makes you want to work out more. Active wear is way cuter than it used to be too.
Are you tired of the made in China clothing? I know I am. Below are a few links to some active wear made in the USA.

Designing for the Changing Seasons
I designed some black friday ads. It was a challenge trying to get in the Christmas mode in early November, but I rose to the occasion. Thinking ahead seasonally is essential as a designer, so I'm getting used to it. Once you start thinking ahead it becomes exciting...looking forward to next season's events (ie: Right now I'm thinking spring and it's really helping me get through the winter). For inspiration I looked at trends in black friday ads, then I blasted some rockin' Christmas music. I thought about my favorite Christmas movies like the Polar Express. My favorite part about Christmas movies are how people come together as a community during this magical time. My design has a Disney-esque whimsical quality.Tuesday, August 18, 2009

I designed this ad for a small kitchen appliance company for trade magazines such as Home World Magazine. They're introducing a new line of ice cream makers with candy crushers. With so many colors to choose from it's hard to pick just one! The ice cream is delicious! I especially enjoy making frozen yogurt.
